Needlestick Facts:
In Site visits to 79 hospitals to evaluate compliance, one study found many cases of employees who were stuck by safety devices. "They thought they were activated, and they weren't or they were improperly activated."
In one study, 90% of the staff was non-compliant with using the safety feature of an active needle safety device.
In the same study, 72% of devices retrieved, from randomly selected disposal containers, had not been activated.
In a CDC study, 270 needlestick injuries with hollow-bore needles involved an ESIP (engineered sharps injury protection) device; in 246 (91%) of these injuries, Nls most commonly occurred before activation was appropriate (43%), when the user failed to activate the ESIP device (25%), or the ESIP device failed (2%).
